Fliegerhorst

On the site of the former airbase in Fürstenfeldbruck, a new residential and working neighbourhood is to be created. Our joint design with Atelier Starzak Strebicki got the honourable mention.

By minimizing the disruption to the landscape, the development fosters a harmonious integration with its environment, supporting both ecological sustainability and a comfortable living atmosphere

A former airbase in Fürstenfeldbruck, Germany is transformed into a sustainable, mixed-use neighborhood dedicated to app. 4000 new inhabitants. Rather than a conventional residential district, the development envisions a self-sufficient, compact urban environment where accessibility, diversity, and a high quality of life are prioritized. The area seamlessly blends workspaces, retail, education, and cultural facilities, complemented by recreational amenities woven into the surrounding public spaces. Encircling the entire complex, a natural green belt enhances the overall living experience, fostering a healthier and more vibrant community.

The neighbourhood structure is defined by the landscape and the cultural history of the site

The design of the neighborhood prioritizes minimal disruption to the existing natural landscape. To ensure a human-centered scale within the blocks, a central avenue runs through both sections, acting as the central spine of a wider network of streets, walkways, squares, and lanes. This layout promotes a welcoming, intimate atmosphere while offering clear vistas of the surrounding countryside. The reduction of motor traffic opens up ample space for expansive communal areas. These areas are a blend of dynamic, active spaces and quiet, reflective zones.

Bicycle lanes run through lush green corridors, connecting the neighborhood to its wider environment. Public transportation is well integrated, with a bus line and a train station embedded within the neighborhood, further enhancing its independence. At the heart of the district, essential services, eateries, shops, and community spaces like a family center are centrally located. Small-scale retail spaces and local organizations occupy the ground floors along the boulevards, encouraging a mix of residential and commercial activities. Former military buildings such as hangars and bunkers are repurposed for cultural and recreational uses, including art studios and community rooms.

A variety of housing options has been planned, ranging from apartment blocks to smaller, standalone homes – The layout includes several courtyards and shared gardens between the buildings, fostering a sense of privacy, peace, and calm for the residents
the district features a variety of recreational spaces, including public squares, communal gardens, orchards, wildlife zones, and playgrounds, scattered throughout the area
