Zakrzówek Park

The redevelopment of the former Zakrzówek quarry in Kraków is a long-term transformation project that allows the natural ecosystem to adapt to the changes occurring in the area, while also, through thoughtful landscape interventions, enhancing and developing the site.

Architectural interventions are limited and ensure the preservation of the site’s « natural » character, its status quo as a public space, while also placing a strong emphasis on minimizing negative impacts on the natural environment

At the time of the architectural competition in 2016, Zakrzówek was at a strategic moment in the formulation of its future shape as an important public space in Kraków and a valuable ecologically green structure within a broader urban and natural context. Our proposal, which was awarded third prize, aims to create a strategy for the natural, landscape, social, and architectural aspects of the area, with time being the paramount factor. The project is conceived as a long-term process of transformation, allowing the natural ecosystem to adapt to the changes occurring in the area while simultaneously enhancing and developing through thoughtful landscape interventions.

Particularly important for maintaining landscape balance are the project’s pro-ecological solutions – all buildings are designed as passive with high energy efficiency

Along with the landscape ecosystem, the social ecosystem is also set to develop – different zones of Zakrzówek are being adapted for safe use by various groups of residents and visitors, neighborhood zones are being created near planned residential buildings, and the local community is growing around the Environmental Education Center. This comprehensive approach to the city as a multi-threaded organism, and thus multi-dimensional design over time, refers to the concept of process urbanism.

The most important aspect of the project is maintaining a balance between the ecological stability of the natural system and increasing recreational accessibility

The adaptation of existing plant communities and the introduction of new vegetation patches are planned according to the following strategies: supplementation within existing patches of valuable habitats, as well as the introduction of greenery in areas of fallow land, wastelands, scrub, and ruderal communities.

The designation of a bathing area on the southern, sunny shore of the small reservoir will channel tourist traffic into a single area, leaving the remaining space to nature
